VELUNACHIYAR HISTORY
Rani velunachiyar –(1730 – 1796),
Parents-Sakkandi muthathal nachiyar – chellamuthu ( regunatha sethupathy)
She married
raja Muthuvaduganathar the second king
of Sivagangai in 1746.
She was
first pioneer queen, in India who fought with the East India Company even the
century earlier to Rani Lakshmi bhai of Jansi (1826-1858).
She won the
battle and ruled Sivagangai kingdom for ten years.
She was an
able administrator well trained in
martial arts and well versed in seven languages.
Raja Mmuthuvaduganathar
had a heroic death in a battle with and Arkat Nawab soldiers at Klaiyar Kovil
temple in (1972). This was 85 years earlier to the sepoy mutiny(1857).
"The first
war of independence” Rani velunachiyar vowed to regain the kingdom on the spot
with the help of Tippu sultan of Mysore in 1780. She invaded Sivagangai defited
Nawab soldiers at the Madurai – Kochadai,
and then British soldiers let by captain martin at Manamadurai.
After
deputing Maruthu brothers to Kalaiyarkovil and Nalliambalam to Thirupathur to take charge of her army.
There she
destroyed the Armoury at Sivagangai at
the help of Kuyili had security women and she fought own and regain her
kingdom.
After the
death of Thandavaraya pillai had
minister Chinnamaruthu was made her minister and Periyamaruthu and the
commander-in –chief with the assistance of these two talented lieutents. She ruled her kingdom with peace.
